Artisan Profile
Laos is the most heavily bombed country per capita in the world.
Between 1963 and 1973, the U.S. dropped cluster bombs every eight minutes for nine years. After the war, villagers in Ban Naphia began collecting aluminum from exploded bombs to craft spoons, a skill passed down by a family from Houaphan Province. What started with five families has grown to 13, producing over 150,000 spoons annually from war and non-war scrap.
Today, artisans in Ban Naphia also create bracelets, earrings, and pendants from recycled bomb materials. Trained by Helvetas, a Swiss NGO, they work safely with these metals, turning remnants of war into symbols of peace and resilience.
Of the bombs dropped, 30% remain unexploded, posing a serious danger to rural communities. Despite this, Lao artisans continue to transform a painful legacy into works of art that honor survival and hope.
